General Directions for Using Extracts & Tinctures as a Tea*

Before consuming any extract or tincture, it is advisable to research their uses and benefits in any herb book, two of which are available through St. Michael Store. Suggested Use: Add 15-18 drops in warm water, one to four times per day, or ¼ to ½ dropper-full may be placed under the tongue. Hold for minimum of 10 to 15 seconds. Swish around the mouth and swallow. May be followed with 1-2 oz. of water to cleanse the mouth. if desired.

All Extracts and Tinctures are in a base of alcohol to extract the properties into a liquid and acts as a preservative. Extracts contain 48%-52% Alcohol. Tinctures contain 60%-80% alcohol. We now have a few Glycerine base extracts, which have a natural vegetable glycerine extraction, instead of alcohol extraction. May be use for children under 12, in child doses.

Burdock Root Extract
Natural healers use this herb as an effective blood purifier, believing that it rids the body of toxins. Excellent for arthritis and applied externally for skin problems. Burdock is still used today as a diuretic, and to support the healing of chronic acne and psoriasis.

For centuries European herbalists have used this herb to relieve water retention and to treat the discomfort and pain caused by poor circulation in the legs. This plant contains steroid-like compounds that may constrict veins and reduce inflammation caused by arthritis and rheumatism.

Capsicum Tincture
Capsicum tincture produces a local stimulant and analgesic effect. Use in cases of pain along the spinal nerves and other nerve endings, nerve root syndrome, inflammation of the voluntary muscles, lower back pain, and pain in the hips. Do not use in case of hypersensitivity.

Celery Seed Extract NOT AVAILABLE
Antioxidant, sedative, reduces blood pressure, relieves muscle spasms, and improves appetite. Recommended for arthritis and kidney problems. Use sparingly while pregnant.

Chamomile Flower Extract
Since the 1600’s Europeans have used Chamomile as a cure for insomnia, back pain and rheumatism, but is usefulness can be traced to the Ancient Egyptians. As a rinse, Chamomile will enhance the highlight of blond hair. It is a delicious tea, and is often used to relieve menstrual cramps.

Cohosh Root, Black,Extract
Black Cohosh is known as a female tonic. Female Native Americans valued black cohosh so much they called it ''squaw root''. It is a herb popular among women to provide nutritive support during natural mid-life changes.

Comfrey Root Extract
Herbal healers have used Comfrey for generations to effectively treat skin wounds. This plant contains allantoin, which helps stimulate the growth of new cells. Products containing Allonotin are useful for all types of skin irritations including burns, bruises, cuts and bug bites. It helps to purify the blood and is useful for kidney disorders. Dandelion Root Extract
Diuretic. Bloodstream and liver cleanser. Increases bile production. Reduces serum cholesterol and uric acid. Tonic for kidneys, pancreas, spleen, and stomach. Recommended for abscesses, anemia, boils, breast tumors, cirrhosis of the liver, fluid retention, hepatitis, jaundice, and rheumatism. Has been said to help prevent age spots and breast cancer

Devils Claw Extract
This herb has been popular in Africa an Europe for more than two hundred years. It is primarily used as an anti-inflammatory and pain reliever against arthritis and rheumatism, and acts to decrease cholesterol. It is also said to be useful in treating gout.

Dong Quai Extract
Dong Quai is considered by the Chinese to be a wonderful herb for female disorders. It may help maintain a proper balance of female hormones and regulate monthly cycles. It is also said to calm the nerves and aid in Vitamin E deficiency. It is also said to be a natural defender against PMS.

Echinacea Angustifolia Rt. & Golden Seal Rt. Extract Blend
Echinacea: Anti-inflammatory. Antiviral. Stimulates certain white blood cells. Enhances immune and lymphatic system. Useful for colic, colds, flu, and other infectious illnesses. Helpful for snakebite.

Goldenseal: Antibiotic, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial. Tonic for: colon, liver, pancreas, spleen, lymphatic and respiratory systems, digestion. Recommended for disorders affecting the bladder, prostate, stomach, or vagina. Cleanses mucous membranes, and regulates menses. Eyebright Herb Extract
Eyebright has been used since the middle ages as a tonic and astringent. It is said to be especially useful for weak eyesight, eye inflammations, and other eye ailments. It is used to bring relief to sour, runny eyes due to allergies or colds. Eyebright is also used for hay fever as it shrinks swollen sinuses.

Gotu Kola Extract

Although probably first used in India, this herb has a tradition of over two thousand years in China. Known as the "memory" herb. Gotu Kola stimulates the circulatory system and is considered a nerve tonic. It is said to improve learning ability and memory, and to have a calming effect.

Green Tea Leaf Extract
Reduces risk of esophageal, stomach, colon, and skin cancer, delays the onset of arteriosclerosis, offsets mental fatigue. Use sparingly during pregnancy or while nursing.

Hawthorne Berry Extract

Juniper Berry Extract
For centuries Juniper Berries have been a folk remedy for urinary tract problems and gallstones. Also wonderful for kidney ailments, to cleanse the blood, and as a preventative for disease. It is a diuretic and stimulant to the stomach.

Kelp Extract
Liquid Kelp, Potassium Iodine. Due to its iodine binding ability in the thyroid gland, Kelp is considered to be a radiation antagonist. Iodine is known to help the body fight infection. Kelp is also an excellent source of calcium, magnesium and potassium, with a host of other trace minerals. It is recommended as a daily supplement in the diet.

Licorice Root Extract

Saw Palmetto Berry Extract
This herbs effectiveness is scientifically documented and is used to tone and strengthen the prostrate gland. Its fatty acids and sterols have been clinically tested and can safely enhance the health and healing of the prostrate. It is also used to treat coughs from colds as well as bronchitis. It may be beneficial to both sexes to balance the hormones. Studies show Saw Palmetto can alleviate prostrate enlargement, while supporting prostrate healing and repair.

Schizandra Berry Extract
Schizandra fruits or berries contain various lignans, mainly schizandrins, these lignans have been found to prevent liver damage, stimulate liver repair, and stimulate normal liver functioning. These properties appear to be related to the various antioxidant abilities of the various schizandrins. Schizandra also helps in digestion, regulating gastric acid release. Other studies have shown that extracts of schizandra are stimulating to the central nervous system and are cholinergic. Recent research studies have indicated that schizandra has numerous biological activities, including: anti-bacterial, mild stimulant, liver protective, anti-depressant, antioxidant, adaptogen and cardiac tonic. In Oriental Medicine, schizandra is recommended for the lungs, liver and kidneys, including as an aphrodisiac (kidney element).

Violet Leaf, Blue, Extract

The whole plant is anti-inflammatory, diaphoretic, diuretic, emollient, expectorant, and laxative. It is taken internally in the treatment of bronchitis, respiratory catarrh, coughs, and asthma. Externally, it is typically used to treat mouth and throat infections. The plant can either be used fresh, or dried, and some reports suggest the dried material is much stronger in regards to its laxative qualities. The flowers are demulcent and emollient and are used in the treatment of biliousness and lung troubles. The petals are made into syrup and used in the treatment of infantile disorders.
